Five Pine Indoor Showcase: Mari Wymore
My husband and I have lived in Central Oregon for 55 years. Most of those years have been spent quilting in my spare time. My husband’s 81 year old grandmother introduced me to quilting in 1965. Quilting for me brings peace. Quilting has brought with it amazing friendships and lots of travel fun experiences. I started quilting using cotton and just piecing. Then I became interested in applique. It took five different women at varying times to try to teach me how to do needle turn applique. I just could not get it until finally the fifth person and I just clicked and I have never stopped appliqueing since. During the last 15 years I have gravitated towards wool applique. I love embroidery and embellishment and fancy stitches and collecting old buttons, etc. which lends itself to wool quilts. Finding wool is an obsession. If I am in a mall or on the sidewalk and someone walks by with a wonderful wool coat or shirt or skirt, I want to reach out and touch it and cut off a piece. I have not given in to that impulse yet but it is there. I probably need therapy.
I like to repurpose wool and find the best wool at thrift stores, garage sales and friends who share their wool stash. Using repurposed wool allows you to work with many different patterns that you cannot find in purchasing new wool. You are working with different weights, weaves and knaps. I found a jacket that was made in Russia and it was fascinating feeling and working with that wool because it was so different in what I was use to. I am adventuring out and have designed some of my own quilts in the last couple of years. I like combining existing quilting pattern elements into a quilt making an entirely new design. (I am not an artist. I cannot even draw stick figures). I cannot die because I have so many patterns I just have to make and a fabric stash that calls to me every time I walk by the room it is stored in.
Mari’s quilts will be on view inside FivePine Lodge during Quilt Show Week: July 6 - 13.
